TRADE DEMAND FOR NON-TOBACCO CROPS RELEASED

The Malawi Investments and Trade Centre (MITC) has released the 2022/23 crop year trade demand. The aggregate demand for market opportunities stands at 90,000 metric tonnes for Soya while Beans stands at 107,545 metric tones. Groundnuts is at 34,260 metric tonnes; Rice is at 23,530 metric tonnes; Tea at 360 metric tonnes; Coffee at 11,000 metric tonnes; Macadamia at 920 metric tonnes; Sunflower at 20,000metric tonnes; Pigeon Peas at 117,000 metric tonnes; Cow/chick Peas at 3,020 metric tonnes; Sesame at 18,640 metric tonnes; Tomatoes at 75 metric tonnes; Mangoes at 300 metric tonnes; Pineapple at 10metric tones; Poultry at 80 metric tonnes of meat, and 3 million trays of eggs.


The report indicates that export opportunities for different products fall under the different regions. It shows that Malawi products are needed by different companies in different regions. There is demand in for 500 metric tonnes of Soya by the Agri Insumos of Mozambique, Grain Solutions from Zimbabwe is looking for 1,000 metric tonnes, United Refineries Limited from Zimbabwe as well is looking for 4,000 metric tonnes, Feedmix from Zimbabwe is looking for 1,000 metric tonnes. This shows that Zimbabwe alone is looking for 6000 metric tonnes of Soya from Malawi.

V & M Grains from South Africa is looking for 10,000 mt, while Raphael Group Limited Processing of DRC is looking for 100 mt, while Jack Zhao from the same DRC wants 360 mt/month totaling to 4,320mt. The Aurora Group of Zambia wants 3,000 mt from Malawi. The Indian based Prestige Feed Mills wants 4,000 metric tonnes while Agrawal and Biocheam from the same India is looking for 1,980mt. The Fertinvest in Dubai wants 20,000mt and Cino International Ltd in China wants 15,000mt as it is with Muthun Rakhi of the same China in need of 500mt. Zaidan Trading, Muhammed Favas of the United Arab Emirate wants 10,000mt and Elic Dib Gedeon, UAE is looking for 1000mt. A total 90,000MT of Soya is required to be exported.

Beans is required in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and the UAE at a total of 107,545MT. This includes of all bean’s types; beans, white beans and sugar beans.

A total of 34,260MT of rice is needed almost in all the mentioned regions and markets. The Ministry of Agriculture is currently undertaking the first crop estimates. It will be until the results of the survey are out that the nation will know that the country will meet the trade requirements as released by the MITC.

However, the department of climate change and meteorological services (DCCMS) in Malawi says that the past rainfall seasons that experienced La Nina conditions similar to current La Nina projections are 1995/96,2000/01,2011/12, 2017/18 and 2020/21. This season’s rainfall pattern has been favourable to agricultural activities.,
